ABOUT ORLY SOFER PSY.D

ORLY HEADSHOT.jpeg

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience treating adults  with a wide range of presenting problems, diagnoses and needs. I help individuals improve their social, emotional, and behavioral problems and feel more satisfied in their connection with their families, their interpersonal relationships, and their careers. My goal is that through our work together, you will explore your history and uncover patterns that you may not have even been aware of, so that you can begin to have more control over your emotions and be excited about your life again. â€‹

I came to the United States as a teen and attended high school in NYC. I completed my undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature at New York University and my doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology at the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Albert Einstein School of Medicine. What drew me to both literature and psychology was my desire to understand the impact of history, culture, family dynamics, and individual predisposition on the formation of our sense of self and on the decisions we make in life. My training in psychology has allowed me to understand and accept aspects of our lives we cannot control but also recognize our capacity to change hard wired ingrained patterns in our lives.

I have worked in a variety of outpatient and inpatient settings, and with individuals from all walks of life.
I recognize that the process of therapy is slow and change takes time.

With patience and warmth, I will support you in finding your true self and taking charge of your own life.

Julia earned her Master’s degree in Social Work with a clinical focus from New York University, and her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland. She is a psychotherapist who works with adults, adolescents, and children navigating life transitions, trauma, anxiety, grief, and relationship challenges. Julia brings a warm, collaborative, and trauma-informed approach to her work, drawing on evidence-based practices tailored to each client’s unique needs. She believes in meeting clients where they are and not rushing the therapeutic process, allowing healing to unfold at a pace that feels safe and empowering. Julia has advanced training in Perinatal Mental Health through Postpartum Support International and specializes in treating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum OCD. She is also trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).

Her therapeutic approach integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment-Based Interventions, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients develop emotional regulation, deepen self-understanding, and foster more meaningful relationships. She is particularly passionate about helping individuals explore their evolving sense of self with compassion and clarity.

In addition to individual therapy, Julia offers psychoeducation and coaching for adults in areas such as stress management, parenting dynamics, and boundary setting. She has extensive experience supporting individuals through grief and bereavement across the lifespan and provides a supportive space for processing complex or traumatic losses. Julia previously trained and worked as a Child Development Specialist at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, where she provided attachment-focused and trauma-informed care to families and young children (ages 0–6). She also supported adults coping with trauma and complex mental health diagnoses.
